Marta Appel (1894-1987) and her husband Dr. Ernst Appel, a rabbi, served as co-presidents of the B’nai B’rith Lodge in Dortmund, Germany. The lodge organized social activities and carried out educational and social work. In April 1937, they were arrested by the Gestapo which dissolved the lodge and confiscated its assets. Soon after their release in May, the Appels and their daughters secretly fled Germany, first to Holland and then to the United States” (DiCaprio & Weisner, 2001, 504).

The source documents at this link are a bit buggy to view, but if you want to see Appel’s documents, you can find them here: http://access.cjh.org/790886#1
